Tween Talk: A Triplet’s Thought

by: Stephanie Lynn Keefe

I was having a random conversation this morning with my step daughter, Samantha Keefe. Because she is the only girl of 10 year old triplets amongst three brothers (two are her triplets and one is age 12), the thought of asking her, “How can you possibly focus at school or in life in general when you are amidst constant distractions?” This is what she said:

“What I have some other people may have as well. What I do, some other people may do too. It's not that I can't focus or anything, it's just that I get distracted very easily. I normally tune out when I am in school. I feel like the subjects I’m learning sometimes just crash into each other, making me super frustrated. I do really well in school, it's just that when I can't focus I feel like I am sort of dumb, not that I am or anything.

For instance, when it's Benchmark testing week and I'm doing math problems  I feel like I'm doing reading problems. When I quit on myself I try to think of what helps me focus and get back on track. It helps to think of my family sometimes, which include my brothers Michael, Matthew, Trevor, my Father and step mother. They are always reminding me (when I “space out”) to come back down to reality and get it together. Singing also helps because I love to sing. I sing on the way to the bus stop making up words as I go.

Another thing that helps with my "focus factor" issue is I love designing dresses. I just have to do what I love so when I get out my dresses I find myself whispering a song to my self. La, la, la, la, la.  See what I mean?

When I catch myself writing really fast or working really hard before I have time to really think things through, I just drop the pencil and forget about the task at hand. I know I can do this test or what ever I happen to be doing because my progress reports are "A's" and "B's."

I know that I can be who ever I want to be and I hope that you won’t ever be afraid to be yourself and be happy with who you are.  Again, I know I'm not the only one in the world that does...or has..."this." ~Samantha Keefe

I receive such genuine relief that I am able to communicate with my children, especially when they are able to share their random thoughts with me. It does however, concern me that this topic of being unable to focus is widespread and seems to affect us all on different levels. If you have suggestions or tips on how to manage distractions, Samantha and I would love to hear from you. Please note: This topic is not a “diagnosis. “ It’s simply the busy-ness of the world today.

Below is a sample of “Sam’s Designs.” Place your orders now as before you know it your 10 year old will have grown up, right before your eyes saying, “Mom & Dad, I need a prom dress.”

I moved to San Tan Valley from Cape Cod, Massachusetts at the end of October, 2010.  I married on Valentine's day of 2011 and have begun a whole new chapter of life.  Since moving here I have had to juggle marriage, kids and the atmospheric changes and environment.  I love to horseback ride, write, read, hike, take photos and meet new people.
