San Tan Bumblebees Competing in Area Competition

I would like to invite all of you to attend the upcoming Track & Field Area Competition, being held in Apache Junction this Saturday, March 6th.  The San Tan Bumblebees have been training weekly in order to compete.  Events ranging from the 100M Yard Dash to the Softball throw, these athletes are ready to compete and are excited to participate!

The San Tan Bumblebees local program was created by my beautiful daughter, Breanna Castillo and myself, in November 2008.  Having always been involved in Special Olympics, we were amazed that the only programs within reach were either in Florence or Mesa.  So we started asking around to see what it would take to create a local program for our area and we did it.

So why the San Tan Bumblebees as a name?  Breanna actually came up with the name and I couldn't imagine it being anything else.  She had been taught that bumblebees shouldn't be able to fly because their wings were too small and their bodies were too big, but they do it anyway, against all odds.  So our team became known as the San Tan Bumblebees.

March 0f 2009 was the first year the Bumblebees competed and not only was it an amazing time, all of our athletes went on to the State Competition and celebrated all of their successes with dancing, food and lots of photo opps with their newly earned medals!  We are confident that we will have just as much fun this year at State too!

We would like to ask all of you to stop by the Apache Junction High School, sometime between 8am and 4pm this Saturday, March 6th, to cheer on our Bumblebees.  There is nothing more amazing than to see the athletes light up when some yells out their name!

With everything that life if presenting people these days, sometimes spending time appreciating what is truly important is what we need.  We hope to see you there!

The San Tan Bumblebees is a local community Special Olympics program open to anyone over the age of 8 years old with an intellectual disability.  For more information about the San Tan Bumblebees, or to become an athelete, volunteer or coach, please visit http://www.santanbumblebees.com.

AJ Art Festival of the Superstitions Returns to the Valley

On November 14, and 15, 2009, the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre 4th Annual AJ Art Festival of the Superstitions was held on the Central Arizona College Superstition Mountain

A wide variety of artists turned out to sell their wares and just to be seen. The list included artists; painters, sculptors, mixed media, digital artists, jewelers, photographers and high-end craft artists; all with different and unique perspectives. There was also a film room, a first for the festival, featuring area film makers showing their film art.

Another first for this year's festival, was a food portion entitled The “Taste Of The Superstitions.” It was sponsored by America’s Cuisine Arizona, a statewide annual dining guide. Area restaurants sampled their menu items in small portions showcasing the best of what they have to offer.

Lori Berry won the Best Booth award. Berry owns the Creative Passion Glass Art Studio located in Apache Junction. Berry, a teacher at Central Arizona College is also responsible for many of the murals seen throughout the campus. For more of Lori's art check out www.LoriGlassArt.com

Joshua Davis won the Best in Show award. Davis has been an artist all his life and describes himself as the, "kid who would sit in class and draw on the corners of [his] homework." Davis does graphite pencil realism art and can be reached at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Described as green before it was cool, Eco Turnings by Dennis Yuresko feature an interesting concept and beautiful results. Yuresko uses all discarded and cracked wood for his pieces, though by looking at the finished pieces it is impossible to tell. Check out www.EcoTurnings.com for more

Another particularly eye catching booth was that of NashFX. Nash has been doing custom airbrush work for years, and decided to branch out into other creative outlets after, "getting bored" with his work. To see more check out www. NashFX.com

J.O. Combs Visual Arts

The visual arts program at J.O. Combs Middle School offers students an opportunity to explore a variety of media while engaging in self expression and  learning about the elements of art, principles of design, major art movements and artists.

Students learn about and experiment with drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and fiber techniques of many cultures. They also learn about the significance of visual art in relation to the historical, social, political, spiritual, environmental, technological, and economic issues of our world.

Collaborative projects offer students a chance to problem solve individually and with a group and to view their work as an integral part of a larger whole. A large and colorful study of cylindrical form, color and value created by all of our seventh grade students will be on display in the cafeteria until November.
