Most residents in San Tan Valley receive a trash and recycle can that is then picked up by a waste management company weekly.
Often there is confusion as to what can be recycled and what needs to be thrown away as trash. The one item that causes the most grief for recycling plants is the plastic bag.
Plastic bags routinely jam the machines at the recycling plant and officials estimate they are losing millions of dollars a year because of them.
While plastic is normally recyclable, plastic bags get stuck in the machines causing them to shut down daily.
